Author Interview: Roger Boylan

An interview with Roger Boylan

For the record, what is your name and what is the title of your latest book?RB
Roger Boylan; Ohiowa Impromptu

Why did you write your latest book?
I wanted to write an American academic satire with strong elements of Killoyle and The Great Pint-Pulling Olympiad and to introduce new absurdities, e.g. minor Hindu gods working as computer programmers.

How did you get started writing? What is it that makes you want to be a writer?
I started writing when I was six or seven. I drew cartoons and wrote travel guides to imaginary places. I’ve always wanted to be a writer because writing is the only way I have of making sense of life and of being in control of my world. I also want to create beauty.

If an unpublished author asked you to give them one piece of advice, what would it be?
If you persist, you may succeed. If you give up, you certainly won’t. Never give up.

If you could only publish in a single genre, what would it be? Why?
Humor. Because my take on life focuses on the absurd and pitiful.

Why should readers read your book?
For its originality, its humor, its compassion, and its style. Above all, its humor.

Who is your favorite author of all time and who is your favorite author writing now?
I have no favorite author of all time. Among my favorites are Vladimir Nabokov, Joseph Roth, Flann O’Brien, James Joyce, Mark Twain, Samuel Beckett, Gustave                          Flaubert, Leo Tolstoy, and Shakespeare. Of today’s crop, I pick John Banville.

Do you think ebooks should be protected by Digital Rights Management (DRM)? Why?
With some modifications, I think the contents of e-books should be protected by  copyright in the same way as the contents of traditional books.

If you could improve any single aspect of yourself (physical, mental, whatever), what would it be?
Greater self-confidence in a slimmer physique.

Thank you Roger.
